There I am… sitting on my bed in my dorm room… a pile of dirty laundry the size of Mount Everest in front of me. I have no clean clothes; the laundry must be done… but I don’t want to do laundry! I want to sit here and relax after a long day of classes!!!!!!!!! OH, THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW WILL I EVER DO ALL OF THIS LAUNDRY!!!!!!!!! (2019 edit: same problem all these years later. I hate laundry)
Some of you may be familiar with this struggle. The good news is I did my laundry last night. It’s not folded, but it’s clean. Why did it take me a week to do laundry? Easy; Procrastination. It ought to be my middle name. I have moments of motivation where I want to get a bunch of stuff done, but they are few and far between. So how do you fight the evil monster that is procrastination?????? One word: Motivation.
Unfortunately, if you’re like me, you don’t always have the motivation to fight away procrastination, so what do you do? Well, I’ve found a few procrastination-proof methods that work for me. Number 1: ask someone to keep you accountable. One day my roommate literally had to drag me out of my bed and sit by me at a computer to get my paper finished. I never knew how mean she could be until that day. I hated it at the time, but I got my paper turned in. Another method is to have someone help you. That doesn’t mean they do laundry for you (but if they offer…. I mean…), but it’s easier if you have someone to talk to while you work, and you won’t feel like you have to do it all yourself so it’s less overwhelming. I wouldn’t recommend this method for studying or doing homework because if you talk while you work, you will not get anything done, speaking from experience. Sometimes if you plan work time with breaks in between, that helps, but when I try that method, my breaks never end, and 5 episodes of teen wolf later, I realize I’ve gotten nowhere.
So, to all my fellow procrastinators out there. We CAN do this… tomorrow. Just kidding, don’t tell yourself you will do it tomorrow because you know, and I know, and every procrastinator in the history of humanity knows that you will not do it tomorrow. Even my mom knows that when I say I’ll do it tomorrow, it probably won’t get done for a week. #thestruggleisreal
